"THE LEFT SEAT
is a wonderful read and a great tale. Robert Serling has blazed a path
and set the standard for all future authors and novelists who wish to
translate the lore of aviation for the general reader. A well-crafted
story set against the backdrop of the commercial cockpit. Seat belts
recommended." Robert Serling has crafted an aviation classic with THE LEFT SEAT. His intimate knowledge of aviation and his talent for dramatic narrative jets the reader into a world once reserved only for those inside the cockpit. THE LEFT SEAT is rich with camaraderie, humor, romance, superstition and the all too common grim realities that make up the complex life of a professional pilot.
For years, I have read at least one book a week, if not two or three. After thirty years, I still had vivid memories of THE LEFT SEAT. I had to resurrect it for a new generation of airplane lovers. What grabbed me was the characters. After all, it was Characters that built aviation, and no one brings them to life better than Bob Serling. The days of amber airways, range approaches, and static on the low freq are long gone and that is good. However, those days created some great characters and spawned some unforgettable stories. Bob has grasped these stories, and has been gracious enough to share them with us. THE LEFT SEAT carries a strong theme of airline safety. I asked Bob about this and he explained, "In Chapter 7, when McKay sees the carnage at his first airline crash scene investigation, that was really me." Enough said. I love this book, and have enjoyed swapping stories and lies with Bob Serling. And before anyone asks, yes, Bob and Rod are brothers.
