A Hostage To Fortune by Ernest K. Gann

BD King Press...

"One of the truly great writers of the 20th Century. Ernest K. Gann managed to pack an amazing amount of living into just one life. His autobiography, A HOSTAGE TO FORTUNE, is a literary and adventure tour-de-force."
~Stephen Coonts

"There is something relaxing about watching an old pro like Ernest Gann go about his work.  He gives readers their money's worth."
~ The New York Times

The first Ernie Gann book I read was In The Company of Eagles. That was in 1967, and I was killing time in the back of a PNA B-720, on my way to Alaska to repo airplanes. I became hooked on his writing and eventually collected all of his works.

When I first contacted Dodie about republishing some of her late husband's books, I had other books in mind like The High and the Mighty. However, this autobiography was the correct choice.

A Hostage To Fortune is an adventure, and I cannot think of another person who has led such a varied life and penned such a splendid story. I gave my accountant, who is an avid reader, a copy. He is neither a pilot, sailor, nor writer. His comment on the book was that it is too short!

Ernie Gann was an aviator. He understood and recognized the bonding of pilot and airplane. He was a sailor. He understood the draw of man to the sea.

Ernie Gann is no longer with us, but his spirit remains. Ernie Gann said he was just a storyteller, but he was much more than that, and that is why I took the time and investment to let him retell his life.
